Chaldon Herring sits in a valley but boasts some of the loveliest views in the county as well as interesting features like the five Marys bronze age barrows and Chaldon hill, one of the highest in the county. The church dates from the 1400s. It is a walkers’ paradise – through the valley to Durdle Door and along the Jurassic coast in any direction, a mere four miles away. For families, there is a variety of beaches to explore whilst at home there is a playing field opposite the cottages and a country pub a short stroll away with outside seating
Its past residents were a mixture of smugglers and farmworkers but in the 1920s the village became a magnet for literary and creative artists belonging to the Bloomfield set.
Our county museum is very much worth a visit, showcasing not only these artists but also Dorset’s connection to fossils and dinosaurs.
